Biography

Steven Andresen was born in 1949 in San Diego, CA. where is spent his youth pursuing his two main interests; art and science. Unresolved between his seemingly differing pursuits, he made the decision to study astronomy at Harvard University 1967. Two years later, his “need to paint” triumphed and he left Harvard to study painting at the California College of Arts in the San Francisco Bay Area where he earned his BFA (with distinction) in 1972 and his MFA in 1973.

In the mid-1980’s Andresen was recognized as one of San Francisco’s foremost artists by San Francisco Chronicle Art Editor, Thomas Albright who profiled the artist’s work in his book Art in the San Francisco Bay Area 1945-1980 (University of California Press, 1985). His 30 year career as an artist has been complemented by a successful teaching career. He most enjoyed and settled on teaching art to elementary school children in Oakland, CA (1989-2007). Through his teaching, Andresen resolved his internal conflict of the artistic and empirical by developing an art curriculum integrating art and mathematics (i.e., lines, shapes, patterns, symmetry, etc.) which has undoubtedly influenced his studio work.

During his career as a painter, Andresen has been attracted to different genres of painting; pop-funk, figurative works, landscapes, still lifes and interiors, and extensive series (“The Runner’s Series” in the 1980’s and “Formalist Abstract Series” since 2002). He has had many successful solo and group shows including exhibiting with the Albright Knox Member Gallery in Buffalo and Upper Market Street, Jehu, and Rolando Castellon Galleries in San Francisco. In 2007, forty of his Formalist Abstract paintings were exhibited in a solo show at the Merced County Arts Center in Merced, CA. His work has been purchased by corporate collectors including AT&T and Intel, as well as many private collectors.

In 2007, Andresen left California for the quiet and rolling hills of upstate New York where he continues to teach, paint, and exhibit. He is an artist-in-residence at Redfish Gallery and Studios in East Aurora, NY.
