Journey Through Abstraction – Statement
A
t the beginning of 2017, I began a series of small square paintings I call "Journey Through Abstraction". The small format (8", 10", and 12" squares) enables me to do a large number of them (over 150 in the first eight months), giving me the opportunity to explore a wide range of ideas and feelings. Since my direction is non-objective abstraction, I chose the square, to avoid any distractions from the "suggestiveness" of either the vertical ("portrait") or horizontal ("landscape") rectangles.
Besides format, the other constant in this series is the use of only paint, brushes and canvas, eschewing any reliance on pre-planning, drawing, the use of rulers and masking tape, or any other hindrance to direct, spontaneous painting.
